Will AI replace shitposters?
Does ChatGPT have taste?
Dear shitposter, Gaut here. Welcome back to all 3,000+ humor enthusiasts of Shitposting Works, a weekly email where I cover the week's best trends, memes, and the topic of shitposts across the internet. This week, I'm trying something new: I've begun curating a list of my favorite accounts on Twitter, called the ⭐️ All Star List ⭐️ - Where I will be adding up and coming memers and shitposters. To access it, you just need to refer 1 person to Shitposting Works at the bottom of the newsletter.

Post of the Week: Will AI replace shitposters?
💡 Is chatGPT a threat to online humor?
WTF is chatGPT?
If you live under a rock, ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI, capable of generating human-like responses to a wide range of prompts and queries. All you have to do is ask:
Can AI make better memes than you?
AI is the scary elephant in the room. Midjourney scares artists. ChatGPT scares anyone that has ever had to think. People are worried we may be on the cusp of AI surpassing human intelligence. This is not just because people want to be smarter than machines, but likely because they want to be useful (and keep their jobs). Just look at the startup world, where six in five crypto companies are pivoting to AI.
AI is already disrupting many industries (and often in good ways) - Education, Finance, Customer service, Healthcare.. but what about shitposting and memes?
AI can write Twitter threads on any given topic. Linkedin is probably already filled with unoriginal people using chatGPT to write posts about their morning routines and business tips — But I don’t think that’s the case for memes and shitposting (yet?).
AI doesn't have a sense of humor
AI, for now, is good at identifying patterns and trying to replicate them, but it doesn’t understand why something is funny. A quick google search rendered a few examples of people experimenting with AI to create memes. Imgflip has an AI meme generator, and there’s a reddit community surrounding the topic. Here’s an example of what Imgur came up with: https://imgflip.com/i/7cprth
AI avoids "crossing the line"
The line between what is a funny joke and an insensitive idea is also often thin. For instance, I’ve recently had a great time tweeting about european work culture:
The joke here is obviously a harmless generalization, even objectively wrong (many times European work culture is far more intense than U.S standards), but it’s still hilarious. I tried asking chatgpt to write a joke about “European work culture,” and it told me it can’t.
Humor is subjective – and shitposting requires taste
Shitposting is often based on context. Good memes also require critical thinking, or expressive a point of view. AI is inherently designed not to have a point of view (or at least blocked from trying to for now).
With all that said, the memes made by humans on the topic of AI are pretty great:

In case you're unfamiliar, Github activity is visually shown with green squares. This costume is basically a human version of that.

The shitposters are rarely funny in person.
I know something about this, I'm speaking from personal experience.
